ISS Astronauts Test Out Microsoft HoloLens in Space

Astronauts Scott Kelly and Tim Peake take a new toy to play with upward in infinite—Microsoft HoloLens.

As part of its Project Sidekick, Microsoft gave NASA its HoloLens devices to send to the International Space Station, and then astronauts could explore the possibilities of holographic computing in space. After a SpaceX rocket explosion in June destroyed the company's get-go effort to get the HoloLens to space, the devices arrived safe and sound in Dec via a shuttle resupply mission.

Now nosotros accept some early pictures of Kelly and Peake playing around with the headgear on the ISS.

"This #saturdaymorning checked out the @Microsoft #HoloLens aboard @Space_Station!" Kelly tweeted over the weekend along with a pretty badass photo of himself wearing the device (above). "Wow!"

Meanwhile, Peake revealed that the coiffure might accept got a niggling sidetracked when they first tried out the new article of clothing computing device:

For the uninitiated, Microsoft's HoloLens is an augmented-reality headset that allows y'all to mix the virtual world with the real globe. Microsoft and NASA said this new technology could potentially reduce coiffure preparation requirements and increase astronauts' efficiency in space.

Astronauts will be able to use HoloLens to communicate with those back on Globe in several ways. There's a "remote expert mode," where ground operators can utilise Skype to encounter what a crew member sees. Operators can then virtually describe notes in a crew member's environment to help with complex repair tasks. Until now, coiffure members have relied on written and voice instructions, then this could exist a huge step up.

Also that, at that place's also a "procedure mode" where animated holographic illustrations are overlaid onto objects with which the coiffure is interacting. This could help with crew grooming and exist an "invaluable resources" for missions deep in the solar system, where communication delays are a problem, NASA and Microsoft have said.
